Mercadona opened its first store in Viseu this Tuesday, October 25th, on National Road 231, in the parish of Ranhados.
“ Viseu is once again reinforcing its position on the investment map with the arrival of Mercadona. This is great news for the region, translating into the creation of jobs and opportunities for everyone who is part of this team, but also for those connected to it, namely producers and suppliers. We congratulate Mercadona on this further investment, particularly for its decentralization, also prioritizing the interior of the country ,” highlights Fernando Ruas, Mayor of Viseu.

First in the district
This store is also the first in the Viseu district. “ We are very proud of the opening of our 36th supermarket in the country, the first in the Viseu district. We believe that this investment in the city is an asset for the municipality, not only because of local hiring but also because of the offer of a differentiated and high-quality assortment. We believe that the people of Viseu now have Mercadona as their trusted supermarket, and in this way, we are also moving forward with our expansion plan, getting closer and closer to our 'Boss', the customer ,” says Carla Cunha, Director of External Relations for Central-Northern Portugal.
Efficient store model
Like other supermarkets, this one also has a sales area of 1.900 square meters divided between the sections of butcher, fishmonger, delicatessen, pastry and bakery, perfumery, home and pet care, fruits and vegetables, wine cellar and ready-to-eat with self-service and various dish options.
All new Mercadona stores are built respecting the efficient store model that the company is implementing throughout the chain, with wide aisles, a double-glazed entrance that prevents drafts, specific sections for chilled juices, a sushi counter, a delicatessen with hand-cut ham packaged on the spot, and a machine for freshly squeezed orange juice.
The store has 140 parking spaces and two more dedicated to charging electric vehicles, fulfilling the company's commitment to electric mobility.
Invest in renewable energy.
Mercadona is investing in renewable energy, particularly through the installation of solar panels on its supermarkets. This is the case with this store in Viseu, where there are approximately 507 solar panels with the capacity to produce 200kW. By generating renewable photovoltaic energy on the roofs of its stores for self-consumption, the company saves approximately 20% on electricity annually.
As part of the company's social responsibility policy, this supermarket will donate essential goods daily to AVST - Associação Viseense de Santa Teresinha, a local social solidarity institution with which Mercadona has signed a collaboration agreement.
