Aldi buys stake in Philippine company Dali and strengthens its presence in Asia.

Aldi Süd has acquired a minority stake in the Philippine discount chain Dali, taking a new step in its expansion in Asia, where until now the group's presence has been essentially concentrated in China.

The value of the transaction and the exact size of the stake acquired were not disclosed. Dali will continue to be managed by the current local team and operate independently.

Dali already has around 1.300 stores.

The Philippine chain has become one of the fastest-growing food discount operators in the country and currently has around 1.300 stores.

The concept shares several similarities with the traditional Aldi model, namely a concentrated offering, simplified operations, and a strong focus on low prices.

Dali already serves more than one million customers a day, with a proposition focused primarily on consumer goods and essential household items, supported by proximity formats and low-cost operational structures.

Aldi sees potential for discount in the Philippines.

For Aldi, acquiring a stake in Dali represents a strategic investment in an operator whose model closely resembles its own concept of discount retail . The German group intends to share knowledge and support the next phase of the chain's expansion, without directly assuming its management.

According to Marcus Almeling, CFO of Aldi Süd, the Philippines is a dynamic market with high demand for quality food products at low prices.

The operation gains relevance due to Aldi Süd's still relatively limited presence in the Asian continent. The group has around 7.500 stores worldwide, but until now it only operated in China, where it has approximately 90 establishments.

Indirect entry into the Philippines thus allows it to test a different path from the organic growth used in other markets: investing in an already established local operator with significant size and market knowledge.
