Only 64% of innovative product launches generate additional sales in Spain.

The Spanish market for consumer goods continues to struggle to translate new product launches into effective growth. According to an analysis by Worldpanel by Numerator, only 64% of launches classified as innovative generate incremental sales, a proportion that has decreased by eight percentage points since 2021.

The study, published on the consultant's website , highlights the difference between introducing new products to the market and developing products capable of creating additional demand, winning over consumers, and transforming category performance.

In Spain, approximately 22 new product lines are launched each year, but less than a hundred are considered truly new innovations. The results demonstrate that innovation alone does not guarantee growth. To succeed, a new product needs to be available, known to consumers, and offer a value proposition that justifies trial and repeat purchase.

Distribution is crucial for success.

One of the most relevant factors identified by Worldpanel by Numerator is the ability to secure a significant presence at points of sale. The best-performing innovations achieve, on average, 51% distribution, while those with lower attraction capacity reach only 21%. This difference highlights the role of distributors in transforming a commercial novelty into a product with sufficient scale to conquer the market.

But for manufacturers, securing shelf space is only the first step. Ensuring availability, communication, and visibility throughout the purchase journey is equally necessary.

An innovation that doesn't reach a significant number of consumers is unlikely to demonstrate its potential, regardless of the product's quality or the originality of the proposal.

Nine out of ten successful innovations have promotional support.

The analysis also highlights the importance of commercial and advertising investment. According to Worldpanel by Numerator, nine out of ten successful manufacturer innovations benefit from promotional support, while approximately three out of four rely on television advertising.

These results highlight the need to combine distribution with communication, helping consumers discover new products and understand their benefits.

The consultancy emphasizes, however, that accessibility does not necessarily mean reduced prices. Two out of three successful innovations have an average price higher than that of their respective category, demonstrating that consumers may be willing to pay more when they identify a differentiating value proposition.

The challenge, therefore, lies in justifying this positioning through relevant attributes, convenience, quality, or by addressing needs that are still insufficiently met.

Experimentation alone is not enough: it is necessary to generate repetition.

Beyond commercial presence and visibility, the success of an innovation depends on its ability to convert trial into repeat purchases. A new product may benefit from a launch campaign and generate initial curiosity, but its sustainability requires consumers to buy it again. Worldpanel by Numerator identifies repeat purchases as one of the most relevant signs that an innovation has successfully established itself in consumer habits.

This perspective reinforces the importance of evaluating product launches beyond initial sales, monitoring the evolution of penetration, purchase frequency, and incremental contribution to the category.

Pistachio shows how trends cross categories.

The research also highlights a transformation in how consumer trends emerge. Increasingly, innovation develops around attributes that cut across different categories, rather than originating exclusively within a specific product segment.

Pistachios are presented as an example of this evolution. According to Worldpanel by Numerator, consumption occasions associated with pistachios have grown by 55%, while the ingredient is beginning to gain ground beyond traditional applications, reaching savory snacks , functional beverages, sauces, condiments, cosmetics, and personal care.

This trend demonstrates how a single attribute can become a platform for innovation across different manufacturers and categories.
