Too Good To Go food waste

Too Good To Go and its community saved more than 1.5 million Surprise Bags in 2024.

In 2024, Too Good To Go, responsible for the world's largest app to save food and combat food waste, celebrated another year of achievements.

Last year alone, 1.576.880 Surprise Bags were saved in Portugal, which translates to preventing the waste of 1275 billion liters of water and 4.4 million square meters of land, the equivalent of 510 Olympic swimming pools and 617 football fields, respectively.

The Too Good To Go community also helped prevent the emission of more than 4.2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This positive environmental impact reinforces the company's crucial role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, thus aligning with the principles of sustainability.

Also in 2024, Too Good To Go celebrated its fifth anniversary in Portugal and the success of the application in the country, which, with more than 5 million Surprise Bags saved in just five years through the platform, prevented 14 million kilograms of CO2e, the equivalent of 2.534 flights around the world. Over these years, it has also gathered more than 2 million users and 4 partners, such as Auchan, Celeiro, Padaria Portuguesa, Gleba, Pizza Hut, Pans&Company, Sheraton, Galp, Hilton, UCI, among others.

Maria Tolentino, Country Director of Too Good To Go Portugal, states: “2024 proved to be an extraordinary year for Too Good To Go Portugal, celebrating the more than 1,5 million Surprise Bags saved by our community in the fight against food waste. These results demonstrate the commitment of everyone involved to promoting sustainable practices. A conscious approach to this problem is reflected not only in responsibility, but also in a practical strategy to promote a future without food waste .”

Too Good To Go Platform

Currently in Portugal, more than 1.9 million tons of food are wasted, of which 227 tons correspond to food trade and distribution (INE, 2022). Based on this data, solutions have been created that expand Too Good To Go's mission against food waste, such as the Too Good To Go Platform, a modular software powered by artificial intelligence and launched in 2024 that helps track and redistribute surplus food.

This software identifies products on store shelves that are nearing their expiration date and selects the most appropriate option to reduce the price, applying the correct discount percentage and printing labels, or dispensing them through Surprise Bags, thanks to its integration with the Too Good To Go app.

"Observe, Smell, Taste"

Too Good To Go also continued to expand the “Look, Smell, Taste” initiative, a distinctive feature established in 2021. This feature is added to the packaging of products with expiration dates, helping consumers remember that a product past its minimum durability date may still be safe to eat, and encouraging them to trust their own senses. Currently, this initiative is supported by 46 brands, such as Bimbo, Kellogg's, The Laughing Cow, and many others. This feature can be found on more than 600 products from these brands, which annually corresponds to 700 million packages with this recommendation.

Partnerships

Additionally, in 2024 Too Good To Go joined forces with Refood, the Unidos contra o Desperdício association, and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) to engage with national political parties to discuss including the fight against food waste in their electoral programs for the 2028 legislative elections.

The Liberal Initiative, the PSD, the Left Bloc, and the PAN promoted awareness of food waste, which, according to Too Good To Go, is considered a very positive step in giving visibility to this major challenge.

Beyond this partnership, Too Good To Go also joined and signed the Porto Climate Pact, an initiative of the Porto City Council, which, like Too Good To Go, welcomed the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto (FCNAUP) as new partners committed to carbon neutrality in the city by 2030.
