Symington announces the limited release of 1985 Vintage Ports from Dow's, Graham's and Warre's, sourced directly from their private cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
1985 was an exceptional year, with ideal climatic conditions that resulted in " concentrated wines with great aging potential ." After 40 years of careful aging in ideal conditions, these Ports " have developed enormous complexity and are at an impeccable point of maturity ."
The Symington family has established a tradition of releasing limited quantities of Vintage Ports. After the initial release, the wines are only made available again at two other points in their aging process: as "Library Releases" (20–30 years) and as "Private Cellar Releases" (40+ years). The head winemaker, Charles Symington, oversees their aging and periodically reviews the wines, just as his father did before him.
Each bottle was individually evaluated and re-corked when necessary. The editions are numbered and include bottling, re-corking, and release dates. The design of the labels and boxes highlights the provenance of the wines.
With only 800 bottles of Dow's, 200 of Graham's and 1.000 of Warre's, this release comes from some of the last reserves of 1985 Vintage Port in the Symington family cellars.
“ After each en primeur release, our family has always reserved a small quantity of Vintage Port in our cellars to be re-released decades later. With these 1985 Private Cellar Releases, we are sharing wines that have been part of our family's life for 40 years. They demonstrate the extraordinary ability of Vintage Port to gain complexity while maintaining its vitality, and it is with enormous satisfaction that we offer them now at a peak moment in their evolution,” says Harry Symington, 5th Generation, Associate Director – Marketing & Vintage Port.
