IBM scientists registered more than 9.100 patents in 2018, marking the 26th consecutive year that the company has led in patent registrations in the United States.
IBM led the industry in the number of patent registrations related to artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, security, and quantum computing. “ IBM is committed to leading the technologies that change the way the world works and solving problems that many people haven’t even thought of yet ,” says Ginni Rometty, IBM President and CEO. “ Our clients and their customers are the beneficiaries of these innovations, particularly in the areas where we lead, such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, blockchain, and security for business development .”
Overall, almost half of the patents filed in 2018 are related to pioneering advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, security, blockchain, and quantum computing.
The 1.600 artificial intelligence patents registered by IBM researchers in 2018 include new ways to use these technologies to help communicate and converse, as well as to analyze and protect the planet's lakes and waterways. Artificial intelligence also played a significant role in the more than 1.400 security patents awarded to IBM researchers in 2018, including combating voice phishing.
