Herdade das Servas

Herdade das Servas launches a trio of single-varietal wines for 2017.

Producer Luís Serrano Mira, owner of Herdade das Servas in Estremoz, Alentejo, and Casa da Tapada in Amares, Vinho Verde, is launching a trio of red wines under the Herdade das Servas brand, all vintages from 2017: Petit Verdot, Touriga Nacional, and Alicante Bouschet. Upon release, they will be available in wine shops, specialty stores, and restaurants throughout Portugal and the islands.

This year, with the introduction of new wines, these complete the 2017 trilogy of single-varietal wines, made with varieties planted in the Servas vineyard, located next to the winery building, headquarters and wine tourism center, on the outskirts of Estremoz. With gastronomic potential, these wines pair well with red meats, game, strong cheeses, and cured meats. Due to their acidity and complexity, they are expected to age for between 20 and 30 years. They are all available in standard and magnum bottles.

Herdade das Servas Petit Verdot red 2017

In the winery, the winemaking process for the Herdade das Servas Petit Verdot red 2017 began with the selection of grapes on a sorting table, followed by cold maceration and fermentation in marble lagares (traditional stone vats) with temperature control, and foot treading.

After malolactic fermentation was complete, the wine aged for 12 months in second and third-year French oak barrels. Following bottling, it rested in the bottle for 24 months.

"A clear red wine with a deep violet-red color, denoting aromas of mint, wild berries, spearmint, and chocolate. On the palate, it is complex, mineral, elegant, and with a fresh and persistent finish ," describes the producer.

Herdade das Servas Touriga Nacional red wine 2017

The Herdade das Servas Touriga Nacional red wine 2017 is the ninth vintage of this wine (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2016), remaining faithful to the winemaking and aging process. The grapes were selected and destemmed, followed by a pre-fermentation maceration process. Fermentation took place in marble lagares and stainless steel vats, with temperature control. After malolactic fermentation, it aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months, then moved to the cellar for 24 months of aging.

"Clear and with a deep red-violet color, it exudes aromas of currant, blackberry, fig, chocolate, pepper and floral notes of violet. On the palate, it is complex, full-bodied, fresh and elegant, revealing smoky notes, rich tannins and a persistent finish ," describes the producer.

Herdade das Servas Alicante Bouschet red 2017

Using the same winemaking process as the Touriga Nacional, the Herdade das Servas Alicante Bouschet red 2017 has the same aging time, but differs in the age of the barrels, also made of French oak, here from the third and fourth year.

"A clear red wine, deep violet-red in color, with aromas of plum, blackberry and cocoa, combined with floral notes. On the palate, it is complex, structured, fresh and full-bodied, with smoky notes, rich tannins and a persistent finish, suggesting good aging potential."
