Miserly Spur Muse

Esporão sells the Sovina brand to Musa and becomes a shareholder in the craft brewery.

Esporão has sold the Sovina craft beer brand to Musa, which will now be part of the Lisbon-based brewery's portfolio. The agreement also includes Esporão acquiring 10% of Musa's capital, formalizing a strategic partnership between the two companies.

Founded in 2011 and integrated into the Esporão group in 2018, Sovina was a pioneer in Portuguese craft beer, contributing to the appreciation and recognition of the category.

“ With this transition, Sovina ensures its continuity, becoming part of Musa's portfolio, one of the major drivers of Portuguese craft beer, recognized for its innovation, irreverence and ability to bring beer culture closer to an increasingly wider audience ,” reads the press release.

The operation involves relocating the equipment currently installed at Herdade do Esporão to the Musa factory in Lisbon.

Musa, in turn, is reinforcing its position in the sector, which has been growing in recent years. With four brewpubs and a modern production unit in northern Lisbon, the brewery expects to reach €4 million in turnover by 2025.

“ Sovina is a benchmark in the Portuguese artisan movement and, for many, was the gateway to this universe. Having it in Musa's portfolio is a great responsibility, but also a recognition of the work we have been developing. Esporão's entry as a partner confirms the maturity that the sector has reached and is an incentive for us to continue innovating and growing with quality and consistency ,” emphasizes André Henriques de Carvalho, CEO of Musa.

“ Musa has demonstrated an unparalleled capacity for growth with solidity, creativity, and proximity to the consumer. Adding Sovina to its portfolio and being part of the project ensures that the brand's legacy remains alive, with new opportunities for affirmation and success for both projects ,” says João Roquette, chairman of the board of directors of Esporão.

Esporão, now as a partner and strategic associate, will continue to participate in the evolution of the sector, confident that Musa has the ideal conditions to lead the future of Portuguese craft beer.
