The Confederation of Farmers of Portugal (CAP) has sent a request to the Prime Minister, António Costa, for an urgent meeting so that swift and effective decisions can be made to mitigate the effects of the extreme drought that Portugal is experiencing.
Along with this request for a meeting, CAP sent a document listing approximately 30 measures that must be taken immediately to prevent the severe and extreme drought, which affects more than 91% of the territory, from further aggravating the " catastrophe situation " that national agriculture is already experiencing.

“ The support announcements for the sector presented so far by the Government are meager, insufficient and ill-suited to address the seriousness of the current situation. Furthermore, they are inconsequential because they do not answer basic questions: how can they be obtained, when will they arrive and what is their value? ”, the confederation states in a press release sent to the newsroom.
Acting now in a politically coordinated and committed manner, and adopting the broad set of measures identified by CAP, the confederation ensures that it will be possible to mitigate the social and economic effects of the drought, safeguarding national production, investments and agricultural jobs, as well as cushioning some of the economic impact on consumers.
The severe and extreme drought situation that Portugal is experiencing, as well as an international situation marked by enormous uncertainty and whose effects on production and supply chains cannot be anticipated, but which entails real risks, " should be a concern and immediately motivate the intervention of the Prime Minister ."
CAP calls for a coordinated response from the Ministries of Finance, Environment, Cohesion, Planning and Agriculture, in order to pragmatically address the demands and needs of the current context.
" The drought situation cannot wait for the new government to take office to see the proposed measures properly implemented ," he concludes.
