Dachser's revenues grow 14,9% to €8,1 billion in 2022.

In fiscal year 2022, Dachser's revenues reached €8,1 billion, representing a growth of 14,9% compared to the same period of the previous year. With these figures, the logistics operator marks its second consecutive year of double-digit growth.

The company saw its revenues increase by more than one billion euros compared to 2021, and this year it plans to move forward with investments that will exceed the 300 million euro mark.

The high level of logistical specialization and the reliability and quality of service were the basis for Dachser's success last year. “ We are about to enter a new league ,” stated Burkhard Eling, CEO of Dachser, during the company's annual press conference, which took place this Thursday, March 23rd, in Munich, Germany. “ Our customers appreciate the resilience we bring to their supply chains and value this service. Dachser is now increasingly seen as the partner for global network solutions and a consultant for optimized supply chains .”

Furthermore, the main drivers of Dachser's growth were directly linked to disruptions in supply chains and capacity shortages, which led to an increase in market prices.

The economic boom in logistics gave way to a considerable normalization of business from September 2022 onwards, with a decline in the number of shipments and rates, especially in air and sea freight. Throughout 2022, the company transported 81,1 million shipments (2,9% less than in 2021), totaling 42,8 million tons.

Road Logistics

The Road Logistics business segment, which includes the transport and storage of industrial and consumer goods (European Logistics), as well as food (Food Logistics), increased its turnover by 14,2% to €5,7 billion in 2022. The tonnage transported increased by 0,4%, while the number of shipments decreased by 2,8%, in a context marked by high fuel and energy prices and also by increasing consumer restraint.

Individually, the European Logistics division increased its sales by 13,4%, growing at approximately the same rate as in 2021. On the other hand, the number of shipments decreased by 3,5%, and tonnages remained at a constant level of 30 million. The Food Logistics division, however, grew significantly in 2022, registering a 17,1% increase in sales. As a result of the recovery seen after the end of pandemic restrictions, both shipments and tonnages increased slightly: 1,8% and 1,1%, respectively. In the last financial year, Dachser Food Logistics generated revenues of €1,3 billion and thus remains a stable and reliable pillar of the company's business model.

Air and sea logistics

Following the exceptional year of 2021, the increase in air and sea freight capacities and the stagnation of the Chinese market led to a lower growth in air and sea logistics. In this regard, it should be noted that Dachser ended 2022 with a revenue increase of approximately 16,7%, with turnover rising from €2,1 billion (in 2021) to €2,4 billion. The number of shipments, however, fell by 7,3%.

“ During the pandemic, our air and sea freight business significantly increased in profile, thanks in part to the growing LCL groupage business in maritime transport and our air cargo charter flight network, with 260 flights last year alone ,” emphasized Burkhard Eling. “ Our customers value the high level of integration of our services, on land, at sea and in the air. We will therefore further strengthen this unique business proposition in the future .”

The contract logistics business, which consists of the intelligent combination of warehousing, value-added services and transport, also saw very positive growth. In 2022, Dachser provided its logistics customers with 2,7 million pallet spaces, 152 more than the previous year. Currently, Dachser has 163 warehouses on four continents and plans to open 14 new facilities by the end of the year.

The Dachser team currently consists of 32.850 employees, with the company having hired 1.100 people in 2022. Its high equity ratio, exceeding 60%, allows Dachser to continue investing significantly in expanding its network, digitalization, climate protection, and its employees, even during challenging economic times.

For 2023, the CEO of Dachser announced that the company will continue on its planned course and that, later this year, it will launch a new investment program of over €300 million – in 2022, the logistics operator invested €196 million. In this context, Dachser began 2023 with the acquisition of the Dutch food logistics provider Müller and the air and sea freight carrier ACA International, based in Melbourne, Australia.

The cautious start to the year, with comparatively low transport volumes, is not a cause for concern for Dachser. “ After two years of extraordinary turnover growth, but also enormous pressure on operational teams, we expect normality to return to logistics and our business in 2023 ,” concluded Burkhard Eling.
