The Decanter World Wine Awards, organized by the British magazine Decanter, highlighted the Quinta da Pedra Escrita – Tinto 2020 wine with the Best in Show award, placing it in the Top 50 among the best wines worldwide that were in the competition, achieving a score of 97 points, which corresponded to a platinum medal.
This was the highest rating ever achieved by a Portuguese red wine, and it was presented by Decanter magazine as an example of the "extraordinary potential of the Douro ," which year after year continues to win the highest ratings in this competition.
2023 Edition
In this year's edition, 18.250 wines from 57 countries were entered and evaluated by a jury of 236 experts from 30 different countries, including 53 Masters of Wine and 16 Master Sommeliers. For the selection of the "TOP 50 – Best in Show," only the highest-ranked wines enter this final blind tasting to determine the best of the best. From Portugal, only two other wines reached this top 50: a 1978 Madeira Terrantez and a 40-Year-Old Port.
“ I have always sought to make wines that have the scents and aromas of our land, with an aromatic purity that enhances our terroir, because I believe in the Douro's potential to produce distinctive, world-class wines ,” says Rui Roboredo Madeira, winemaker and owner of Quinta da Pedra Escrita. “ The Quinta da Pedra Escrita Tinto confirms this excellence, in which I sought to highlight the 'sense of place', through viticulture that respects nature, all in organic production mode and without irrigation ('dry farming') and in a winemaking process with minimal intervention ,” adds the winemaker.
This is the second time that Quinta da Pedra Escrita red wine has achieved a score of 97 points in the Decanter magazine competition, joining other major awards already won by this Douro estate, such as the Best White Wine award at the Vinhos de Portugal competition and Editor's Choice by the American magazine Wine Enthusiast.
