Mercadona shopping

Mercadona has purchased €1.500 billion worth of goods from Portuguese suppliers by 2025.

In 2025, Mercadona made a total of €1.500 billion in purchases from national suppliers, reinforcing its commitment to the Portuguese market and the development of the agri-food chain.

According to the company, this value reflects the continuity of the relationship model with specialist suppliers and inter-suppliers, based on "transparency, fostering trust and long-term relationships".

Among the purchases from specialist suppliers, highlights include more than 22 million liters of milk, 43.000 tons of tomatoes, 22.500 tons of meat, 10.000 tons of kiwifruit, and 3.200 tons of fish from the fish market.

Shared growth

Throughout last year, the company worked with specialist national suppliers and inter-suppliers, a relationship that began before the company arrived in Portugal in 2019. Since that year, in 6 years, Mercadona has reached a total purchase volume from national suppliers of 6.000 billion euros.

Pedro Barraco, Director of the Agri-food Chain at Mercadona in Portugal, states that “ the growth the company has experienced in purchases from Portuguese suppliers, resulting in a cumulative value of €6.000 billion since 2019, reveals the importance Mercadona attaches to its specialist suppliers and inter-suppliers, from North to South and the islands, who collaborate daily to ensure the continuous and high-quality supply of the more than 70 stores in Portugal. However, this commitment by the company is not limited to the Portuguese consumer. We currently have many Portuguese suppliers and inter-suppliers who already supply stores in Spain, which demonstrates the quality of products produced nationally. ”

In 2026, Mercadona will open its first stores in the districts of Faro, Beja, and Vila Real, and it has already debuted in Castelo Branco, but its presence was already felt in these districts through purchases from local suppliers.
