The Kaufland hypermarket chain, another asset of the Schwarz Group, owner of Lidl, has shown interest in buying a hundred Real stores, which were put up for sale in September by the German Metro group.
According to Patrick Kaudewitz, head of Kaufland, the chain is interested in buying between 80 and 100 hypermarkets. When questioned by Lebensmittel Zeitung about the potential deal, the manager acknowledged it as a "historic opportunity" for Kaufland, which could thus increase its sales by €2.500 billion, according to estimates.
The hypermarket chain thus joins a long list of potential buyers of Real. The German company Globus, Google, and Amazon are also mentioned as being interested in the Metro group's brand.
