The Nestlé factory in Avanca was recognized by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) as the unit that recorded the greatest reduction in primary energy consumption nationwide between 2009 and 2014, coinciding with the implementation of the Energy Intensive Consumer Management System (SGCIE).
The award was presented at the event “Energy Efficiency: the path to a more competitive industry”, held in Lisbon.
This level of energy efficiency was achieved through the implementation of an energy consumption rationalization plan (PREn) established for the Nestlé factory, which resulted in a 10% reduction in specific consumption, as highlighted by DGEG, but also in a 29% reduction in the energy intensity of the Avanca factory, a multi-product unit responsible, among other things, for the production of brands such as Cerelac, Nestum, Chocapic and Mokambo.
Improve energy efficiency levels and reduce environmental impact.
The implementation of this rationalization plan over five years consisted of installing various pieces of equipment that allowed the factory to achieve better levels of energy efficiency. The project began with the installation of a cogeneration plant to produce steam for the manufacturing process and other equipment that enables various energy and thermal optimizations, acting on the level of energy losses that may occur during the manufacturing process, significantly reducing them.
Over the past five years, Nestlé Portugal has reduced its water intake by 62%, CO2 emissions by 7,5%, and waste sent to landfill by 58%, which corresponds to 261 tons.
In the first six months of 2018, compared to the same period in 2017, Nestlé Portugal reduced its waste sent to landfill by 86,4%, water intake (m3/ton) decreased by 2,3%, energy consumption dropped by 10,7%, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 15,7%.
