Eupago launches Bizum in Portugal and opens national commerce to 30 million Spanish consumers.

Eupago has launched Bizum in Portugal, allowing national merchants to accept one of the most widely used payment methods among Spanish consumers.

The Portuguese payment institution starts with an installed base of 30 clients and aims to position itself as one of the main gateways to Bizum for companies operating between Portugal and Spain.

The company expects to reach 15 active merchants, more than 12 million transactions, and €720 million processed annually across the two markets within a five-year timeframe.

Target of €180 million processed in three years.

The strategy outlines intermediate goals for the first three years of operation. During this period, Eupago expects to add five thousand active merchants, process three million transactions, and reach an annual volume of 180 million euros.

In five years, the forecast rises to 15 merchants, more than 12 million transactions, and 720 million euros processed annually in Portugal and Spain.

According to the company, the launch responds to demand identified among Portuguese retailers who already sell to the Spanish market.

Portuguese stores can now accept payments from Spanish customers.

In Portugal, the solution will allow Spanish consumers to use Bizum in participating Portuguese online stores , maintaining a payment method with which they are already familiar in their home market.

Eupago believes this option could help domestic merchants reduce one of the existing barriers to cross-border purchases and improve indicators such as conversion rates and shopping cart abandonment.

"When a consumer buys from outside their country, trust at the time of payment is crucial ," says Telmo Santos, CEO of Eupago.

According to the official, allowing a Spanish consumer to pay through Bizum in a Portuguese store creates conditions to make the purchasing process more familiar and simplifies access for Portuguese operators to the Spanish market.

Integration with Shopify, PrestaShop, and WooCommerce

Bizum will be available through the Eupago API and plugins for Shopify, PrestaShop, and WooCommerce.

The solution will also be integrated into the Split Payments service, aimed at marketplaces and platforms that need to automatically split each transaction between different sellers or recipients.

The company aims to cover both small online stores and organizations with more complex business models and payment structures.

In Spain, the strategy also involves making it easier for small businesses to join Bizum through simplified onboarding processes and commercial support.

New stage of the Iberian strategy

This launch represents Eupago's second major move in building a payment offering geared towards the entire Iberian Peninsula.

“We are not just adding another payment method. We are building an Iberian offering with scale, capable of serving everyone from a small online store to a marketplace ,” says Telmo Santos.

The company aims to make available in both markets the payment methods that consumers in each country already routinely use, reducing friction when shopping across borders.

Prior to integrating Bizum, Eupago had already launched EuroPix, a solution that made PIX, the instant payment system used in Brazil, available in the Iberian Peninsula.

The service was made available to Portuguese and Spanish merchants for both e-commerce and in-person payments via SMART POS terminals with QR Code reading.

According to Eupago, it was the first company to allow this type of transaction on payment terminals in the Iberian Peninsula.

With this solution, the company sought to facilitate payments for Brazilian consumers, in a potential market that includes approximately 400 Brazilian residents in Portugal and two million Brazilian tourists who visit the country annually, according to data presented by Eupago itself.

Initial commercial integrations are being prepared.

Bizum will be made available progressively to Portuguese and Spanish merchants. Eupago is currently preparing the first commercial integrations and intends to use its current base of 30 customers to accelerate adoption.
