1,6 million in gyms/health clubs

In the first wave of 2019, the TGI study by Marktest counted 1,577,000 individuals who reported going to the gym/health club (reference: in the last 12 months), a number that represents 18.4% of the universe composed of residents on the mainland aged 15 and over.

A longitudinal analysis shows that, after a decline between 2011 and 2013, visits to these establishments have increased since then, although a decrease was recorded in 2018, which was apparently overcome in 2019.

Gym/health club attendance is higher among women than men, and among younger people than older people, as is the case in the Greater Lisbon area.

Differences are also observed between social classes, with values progressively decreasing from 30.3% among individuals in the upper and upper-middle classes to 12.7% among individuals in the lower-middle and lower classes.

TGI data also reveals that Fitness Hut is the gym that most individuals report having attended during the reference period, followed by Solinca, Holmes Place, and Pump.
